WRITERS GUILD OF AMERICA ADDRESSES BACKLASH OVER NOT DENOUNCING HAMAS ATTACK IN ISRAEL: The Writers Guild of America West issued an apology on Tuesday (October 24th), after the union faced significant backlash for staying silent following the Hamas attack in Israel earlier this month. Explaining their decision, the guild wrote, “We did not, for example, make a comment after Russia invaded Ukraine, nor on terrorist attacks in Somalia, Pakistan or elsewhere. It can be an imprecise science for a labor union to pick and choose where it weighs in on both domestic and world affairs.” They added, “We are American labor leaders, aware of our limitations and humbled by the magnitude of this conflict. However, we understand this has caused tremendous pain and for that we are truly sorry.”
CHECK OUT THE OFFICIAL TRAILER FOR ‘LEAVE THE WORLD BEHIND:’ According to The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix released the official trailer for Leave the World Behind on Tuesday (October 24th), starring Julia Roberts, Ethan Hawke, Kevin Bacon, Mahershala Ali, and Myha'la Herrold. The apocalyptic thriller, based on the novel by Rumaan Alam, features a couple played by Roberts and Hawke, who rent a luxurious house “out by the beach,” when a couple played by Ali and Herrold return to the house, claiming it is theirs. With cyberattacks happening across the country, “the two families reckon with a looming disaster that grows more terrifying by the minute, forcing everyone to come to terms with their places in a collapsing world,” according to the logline. The film will be released in theaters on November 22nd, and it will hit the streaming platform on December 8th.
JACOB ELORDI SAYS IT WAS ‘SURREAL’ TO WATCH ‘PRISCILLA’ ALONGSIDE PRISCILLA PRESLEY: Jacob Elordi, the actor who plays Elvis in Sofia Coppola‘s new biopic about Priscilla Presley, told Hoda Kotb on Tuesday’s (October 24th) episode of the Today show that it was “surreal” to watch Priscilla alongside the Naked Gun actress. “Watching the film with Priscilla in Venice at the Venice Film Festival was just entirely surreal and watching her watch her life through her eyes played back to her,” the Euphoria actor said. “It felt kind of invasive, so I just sort of sat there like a little stiff.”
‘ALL OF US STRANGERS’ LEADS THE 2023 GOTHAM AWARDS NOMINATIONS: According to Variety, the 2023 Gotham Awards nominations were announced on Tuesday (October 24th). All of Us Strangers led the way with four nods, while Past Lives and A Thousand and One followed close behind with three nominations. This marks the first year that the Gotham Film & Media Institute removed a budget cap of $35 million for eligible films, making it possible for Ryan Gosling to be nominated for Outstanding Supporting Performance for his role in Barbie. The winners will be announced during a ceremony at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City on November 27th.
